Ever Changing, Ever Praying

Kids. They grow up so fast.

In June, our family celebrated our first graduation. Pre-Kindergarten graduation, that is, and how excited we all were. Aaron didn't know what to expect. They had practiced their song -- "Kindergarten Here We Come" – and their little poem – "I'm a Graduate". He was most excited to leave his preschool for reasons you wouldn't think – it was because he hates taking naps and wants to bring his own food. (Aren't children precious?)

I've been excited with him all along the way. I love seeing him growing and learning, but today as I dropped him off at Sports of All Sorts Camp I thought, does he have to grow up so fast. He's just a little guy.

And isn't that exactly how life can be? We love to see others mature and grow and yet at times it feels like it is too fast or we are still a little unsure about what is around the corner. We get used to things being a certain way and we get comfortable.

Expectations and Change

Over the last several years we have had certain expectations of Bethany Presbyterian Church -- both the congregation and its staff and over the last year we have learned that life is ever changing. Our wonderful ever enthused Jim Grossman continues to learn his limitations since the installation of a pacemaker-defribulator last summer. Kathy Groff and Cas Ardrey have both needed to resign from Bethany. We now have a new Secretary, Jennifer Book in the office working with us and in July we will begin the discernment/selection process for a new Music Director/Choir Director for Bethany Church. Much has changed in just a few months.

However, we have also raised well over the funds needed to repair the organ and all new leather stops have been installed in our pipe organ. The congregation has made a strong statement that no matter how things may change, members and attenders are committed to supporting and being part of Bethany. I am so very proud of each and every one of you!

We do not always know what God is doing in our midst, but what we do know is that God works in and through each one of us. God is preparing us for what is to coming and providing what we need to begin a new chapter in the Bethany story.

Taking a Breath

Summer is traditionally a time to take a breath. Please let it be a reminder for us of the breaths we take throughout our journey. The Lord has been doing some great and powerful work in this church and in our hearts. Each time we feel like we are stressed or had all that we can handle we are reminded that the Lord has given us the strength for the journey and then given our souls a chance to take a breath before the next challenge approaches.

From a Breath to a Prayer

Now is that time for a breath, but we also know that no matter what comes before us we need not fear. But in fear, in times of crises, illness or confusion, we need to recenter upon God and pray for a clear sense of direction, for discernment, for strength, for peace.

And as we ask for ourselves, may we also ask this for our Oromoo brothers and sisters who will begin a leadership transition themselves. Rev. Gemechisa Guja retires as of June 30, 2009. However, he will continue to lead worship and preach while also moderating their Session through the end of the year if needed. They now begin a process of uncertainty, looking to God for discernment as they make sure all the responsibilities and tasks are covered and ministries continue during this process.

My Brothers and Sisters, let us devote 10 minutes each day to pray for Bethany and Oromoo – that God brings us the discernment and strength we need to be faithful disciples and servants of our Lord.

Looking to the Future

Bethany has received a grant from Donegal Presbytery to help finance a church coach that is gifted and trained in church discernment, visioning and transformation, but we need your help. We need regular prayer from the entire congregation for discernment and a common vision. Please pray this prayer with me:

“God of all knowledge, guide Bethany to follow the path you designed for us. Give us discernment to see your vision. Give us an open heart to follow where you lead; and instill in us a sense that these decisions are made in your name and for your purpose. May we all hear clearly your call and follow you. Amen.”

And as we join together in prayer, may we be constantly assured and connected with God and one another.
